BIOGRAPHY

Hi! My name is Stephan Fröhlich, I am a German film producer, director, director of photography (member of the BVFK – Federal Association of TV Cameramen) and photographer.

 

I grew up in the small town of Espelkamp and attended the elementary school Ostlandschule in Espelkamp from 1995 to 1998.​​ After that I graduated from Söderblom-Gymnasium in 2009. After an internship at the film production company Omnimago in Ingelheim, my desire to work in the film industry became stronger. During my directing studies at the Ruhr Academy in Schwerte, which I graduated in early 2015, I switched to the field of commercials. Because of this degree, Dortmund has been my adopted home since 2010.

 

After a few years as a freelancer and a start-up grant from the media start-up center NRW in 2013, I decided together with my father Günter Fröhlich in 2015 to found the film production company Format Fröhlich Filmproduktion based in Dortmund. Within our family business, we produce conceptual moving image and marketing campaigns in the areas of advertising, cross media, social media, image films, brand films, product videos and music videos. In the meantime, the company has expanded to include a further location in Roßbach (Wied). In the same year I had the idea of a short film festival in my hometown of Espelkamp. After a presentation to the city's cultural committee, it was decided and I've been organizing and hosting it ever since  Espelkamp short film festival "SPITZiale" .

Since 2015 I have also been teaching as a senior lecturer at the Deutsche POP Academy in Bochum in the degree courses camera assistant, cameraman, cutter and photography. Since the introduction of the bachelor's degree in October 2021, I have also been responsible for the bachelor's management and module lectureship. Here, in cooperation with the University of West London (UWL), I pass on my artistic and technical knowledge to the students directly from practice.

 

As a director and cameraman, I have been involved in numerous internationally award-winning short film projects, commercials and music videos. The last short film "Malou", in which I worked as a cameraman, made it into the selection for the Oscars 2020. Our latest short film production "You belong to me" was shot in 2021. Here I was involved as a producer and DoP and the project was funded by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW.
